Chapter 16

A very pleased Gordon Humphries made his promised appearance and vacated the premises with the two completed paintings tucked safely inside his car. A van, he said, would come for the primary painting at the first of next week. The framing of those paintings would take place shortly thereafter. Once they had them framed, they would lock them inside the vault alongside all the others until the public opening.

After his departure, Mariah placed the first layer on the secondary painting and provided backgrounds for the rest of the smaller portraits. Now they all needed some drying time and that gave her the opportunity to work on Edgar’s parchments.

She made her way into the chapel and retrieved the Latin texts from their hiding place beneath the flooring. Once she had them cradled safely in her arms, she descended the steps and entered the great hall.

The thick stack of documents looked rather intimidating. Nonetheless, something of importance lay hidden within them. The marriage record she and Cailen discovered earlier proved the final document recorded in the hand of the same cleric. Everything else preceded that record. Cailen believed that Edgar penned them all. Therefore, he too had knowledge of what her ghost wanted them to find.

After putting the records in order by type and date, Mariah picked up the earliest piece of parchment and studied the heading. If she translated the words accurately, the cleric collected tithes as his first duty in the year 1318. He met the people of Cailen’s fiefdom and prepared for his first Sabbath. The next paragraph contained words she didn’t recognize and would therefore require an online translator. She turned her gaze toward the stairs. Just as she rose to her feet, Cailen appeared at her side with computer in hand.

“I thought ye might need this.” He gave her a wink as he set the computer on the table.

“Yes, in fact you just saved me a trip,” she said as she opened the lid, and powered it up. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He took a seat beside her, sitting backward on the bench and then settled his back against the table. “Afore ye begin, I wondered if ye could help me out.”

“Of course, what would you like me to do?” she asked.

“Well, I tried to decipher some of th’ words I found in Sybil’s kitchen. There are a few on some of th’ jars that I had trouble readin’,” he said.

“Do you remember the order of the letters?”

“Aye,” he said. “They both begin with th’ letter V.”

“Go ahead and sing them out.” Mariah wrote the letters as he gave them to her. Once finished, she turned the notebook to face him. “The first word is valerian and the second is vervain.”

He looked befuddled. “I never heard of them. What are they used for?” he asked.

“I don’t know. In all honesty, I’ve never heard of them either. Hang on a minute and I’ll look them up. I’m kind of curious, myself,” she murmured as she turned her attention to her keyboard.
